St. Julia Thrift Shop

In the basement of St. Julia Church is a well-stocked thrift shop staffed by volunteer parishioners. In it you are likely to find many barely used quality and designer labels in men, women and children's clothing at real bargain prices. Do stop in at St. Julia's boutique on the Post Road!

Volunteers to staff the Thrift Shop are warmly welcomed and need be available for as little as 3 hours at a time on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Gently used clothing for all ages, seasonably appropriate in clean "ready to wear" condition, along with highly desirable costume jewelry, collectables, small household and kitchen items and bed/bath "treasures" are all appropriate.

Donations of clothing in ready-to-wear condition, small household items, china, glassware, bric-a-brac and costume jewelry are always needed for sale. Tax deductible receipts are available.

The Thrift Shop is open year-round except for the months of July, August and December. The hours are:

  • Tuesdays:  10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
  • Wednesdays:  10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

The Thrift Shop WILL CLOSE Wednesday, December 9th at Noon for a winter break and re-open on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. There are special sales in December!

Proceeds from thrift shop sales benefit the charities and evangelization efforts of our parish, and it offers direct assistance to the poor in various ways. Donations gratefully accepted.

Notice from Father Evans Regarding Thrift Shop Closing

In view of the upcoming restoration and renovation of St. Julia Church, it will be necessary to suspend the Thrift Shop operations, which may be resumed once the renovation project is completed if there would be sufficient volunteer workers to staff the shop. Effective July 1, 2010, and for more than a year, the Thrift Shop will not be open.

The current stock of the Thrift Shop will be sold between now and its usual summer closing point at the end of June. During the months of February through June, helpers to take part in the many tasks of running and clear- ing the inventory of the Thrift Shop will be as needed as ever.

The number of available workers for the Thrift Shop has been decreasing as years go on. The response to the recent call for additional helpers has been most encouraging. One volunteer per day makes a significant differ- ence. There is still need for more volunteer workers, especially in view of the sell-off of stock that will need to happen.

Looking ahead, the Thrift Shop will no longer accept the following items: books, records or tapes, lamps, small furniture, sports equipment, and boots. The Thrift Shop will continue to welcome spring and summer clothing items, but only if gently used and ready for sale. As of March 1st, your donations of winter clothing items should be made not to the Thrift Shop but to the St. Vincent DePaul Society's box behind St. Julia Church. Especially needed now is a new supply of costume jewelry, collectables and decorative items, as well as the "fun things" and "treasures" for which even dealers come to search.

St. Julia Thrift Shop opened in 1965, as a fresh-air sale of gently used merchandise. Through the years, the Thrift Shop has consistently provided low-priced items to shoppers from near and far, as well as income to support parish outreach efforts, and also donations to assist relief and charitable projects beyond St. Julia Parish. For over three decades, the Shop operated only in the warmer months. Beginning with the winter of 1997, after a move to the church basement made possible by the opening of the Parish Center, the Shop has operated approximately nine months of the year, and in the past few years has closed in the summer months of July and August.

Sincere gratitude is due all those women, and a few male helpers, who have worked so hard over the many, many years of the Thrift Shop's existence.
