During this month of October the Church traditionally encourages the faithful to greater devotional prayer seeking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We turn to Mary, this month especially under her title of Our Lady of the Rosary, to assist us as modern day disciples. Mary’s unique role in salvation history makes her the perfect intercessor and model of holiness.
We are all called to be holy. Most of us realize, though, that growing in the ways of perfection isn’t easy. We have our weaknesses, faults and failures that need to be overcome. We have our sins that call us to be reconciled with our God. Mary reminds us that we should not fear submitting our will to the Lord. She shows us the rich mercy of our God! Her remarkable proclamation of praise continues to echo daily in the Church’s Divine Office, The Liturgy of the Hours, as we pray “…The Lord has done great things for me and Holy is His Name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation…”
Mary, as the Mother of our Lord, calls us to greater holiness and guides us along the path of discipleship. As she followed in His footsteps so, too, we are directed along the way. She would have to endure much hardship and pain, ultimately standing beneath the cross bearing her Son. Mary shows us that the way of holy discipleship is found in sacrifice. May we faithfully come to the cross and behold her Son!
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God –
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Blessings and best wishes,
